Credentials and commercial disclosure

Who is speaking, what they are qualified in, and who stands to gain.

Why every entry states a credential

This field contains an unusual number of authors whose authority rests on following rather than on training, and an unusual number who sell something connected to the argument they are making. Neither is disqualifying. People who develop methods are often best placed to explain them, and two of the most useful books in this collection are by authors with no relevant credential at all. But a reader deciding whether to spend money, or to alter their treatment, is entitled to know who is speaking and who benefits. Every entry in this volume states the author's credentials, including their absence, and discloses commercial interests where they exist.

Why commercial interests are disclosed

Many authors in this field sell programs, supplements, certifications, equipment or clinical services connected to the arguments their books make. Where that is so, the entry says so. This is disclosure rather than accusation: the people who develop methods are frequently the people best placed to explain them, and the presence of a commercial interest does not make a book wrong. It is information a reader deciding whether to spend money is entitled to have.

How this appears on the site

Each of the 660 entries carries the author’s credentials exactly as printed in the volume — degrees, institutions, professional standing — including the cases where an author holds no credential relevant to the subject they are writing about. Two of the most useful books in the collection are by authors with no relevant credential at all, and the entries say so.

Where an author sells a program, a supplement, a certification, a device or a clinical service connected to the argument their book makes, the entry says so. This is disclosure rather than accusation.

Our own commercial interest

This site sells the volume it describes, and the Buy button on each entry is an Amazon Associates link that may earn a commission. The Borrow button, which costs the reader nothing, is given equal weight throughout. The full terms are on the affiliate disclosure page.
